THE SOLUTIONS

MOBILIZING TEAMS

PREPARATION AND COMMITMENT
Each of us are different. We all have strengths and weaknesses that make us unique. Many Christians have a desire to do mission work, but no knowledge of how to apply the skills that they have been given. Using proven methodologies, we will help each person understand how to effectively use their God-given talents. These methods include:

  • Each prospective participant will participate in interviews conducted by experienced short-term missionaries. These discussions will guide the individual through the process of making a full commitment to participate; and

  • Most prospective participants will complete a personality assessment and needs analysis using the Birkman Method. This assessment will provide the individual with an inventory of their spiritual gifts and will also be a key component of the team-building process.

EQUIPPING
Formal training will be conducted to thoroughly prepare individuals to enter the mission field on a short-term basis. These sessions will include:

  • Methods for laying the groundwork and establishing a relationship with the student;

  • Methods for effectively teaching the gospel;

  • A knowledge and respect of the specific culture in which they will be working;

  • An understanding of the local church with whom they will be working and how the short-term mission effort will support its needs; and

  • Assistance with travel arrangements, logistics (procuring passports, etc.), and suggestions for fundraising. However, it should be noted that each team member will be responsible for raising their own funds.

TEAMING
A key to success in building an effective short-term mission team is helping individual members understand the role that they play within the team and how to maximize their strengths. One of the greatest rewards in short-term mission work is the relationships that are built during the work. Specific methods will include:

  • All team members will be expected to attend an Orientation Session prior to leaving for the mission field. The session will include introductions, team-building exercises, and logistics for the work; and

  • Each team member will be given a specific assignment that best fits their skills inventory. Typical roles may include team leaders, teachers, co-teachers, benevolence coordinator, and administrative support.

LEADERSHIP
The success of each short-term mission campaign will depend upon a number of leadership roles within the team. We are dedicated to the development of leaders to fill these roles, including the following:

  • Team leaders will be responsible for a maximum of three to four other people. They will be the first line of support for these individuals during all aspects of the work – teaching, benevolence, travel, etc.;

  • Campaign directors will be responsible for the overall work of the team. Ultimately accountable for the success of the work, these men will work closely with team leaders and handle any issues that are escalated. They will be the liaison with local church in the field. They will facilitate the Orientation Session and make team assignments;

  • For larger teams (typically eight or more), an administrative assistant will accompany the team. These individuals will assist with coordination of the work by doing things such as scheduling studies and coordinating paperwork. They may also be asked to perform other important functions such as arranging ground transportation and scheduling meals; and

  • Whenever possible, we will identify medical resources (physicians, nurses, or EMT) to accompany the team. This will be a primary focus for larger teams.
